DAVID SUTTON

David was like all Canadian boys, his first love was hockey, but he realized he’d have to improve his skating if he wanted to play allstar, so he decided to take a few figure skating lessons, and the rest as they say… is history.

The more he skated, the more he liked it and soon he realized his future laid in axels and not slapshots. Sutton spent 10 years skating with the Guelph Figure Skating Club before teaming up with Mary Church of Oakville. By 1970, they had won the Canadian Dance Championship. They went on to skate in the World Championships in Yugoslavia. He was 21 at the time, but this began a lifetime involved with figure skating.

Soon after his Canadian title David Sutton turned pro and was a principal skater with the famous ‘Holiday on Ice’ touring North America for 4 years and Europe and South America for another 10 years after that. Once he hung up his blades, he went on to manage the tour in Europe and Asia. Since 1989 he has organized the annual tour of World and Olympic Champions featuring current stars like Elvis Stojko and current Canadian dance champions Victor Kraatz and Shae-Lynn Bourne.

Inducted into the Guelph Sports Hall of Fame April 21, 1997
