Bert Brown was a gifted hockey and baseball player from the time he was a youngster. Growing up in the Guelph Minor Hockey Association and the Guelph Minor Baseball Association he was an impact player at every level.
In hockey, Brown played Junior B from 1956 to 1958 before graduating to Junior A with the storied Guelph Biltmore Madhatters where he played until 1960. In his final season with Madhatters he had 22 goals and 46 points finishing third in team scoring behind future NHL Hall of Fame players Rod Gilbert and Jean Ratelle. After his junior career he graduated to play Senior A for the Guelph Regals, Windsor Bulldogs and Galt Hornets from 1960-1968 where he finished in the top ten of scoring every season.
Brown would later share his expertise with others coaching the GMHA midget all-stars, the Hespeler Junior B Shamrocks and the Milton Junior B’s. He also helped countless young children improve at the game he loves by running the GMHA skating school for seven years.
On the ball field he was a team leader. After minor baseball he played Junior Intercounty where he was named an all-star catcher. Later he would play in the highly competitive Inter-City Fastball League with the Guelph Dairy Queens and the Guelph Co-ops where he was an all-star first baseman.
Bert Brown was a great athlete who cared about his community. His willingness to teach and mentor young players after his playing days were over benefited many.
