About The Guelph Sports Hall of Fame

Established in 1992 by the City of Guelph and the Kiwanis Club of Guelph, the Guelph Sports Hall of Fame is a non-profit organization that recognizes and honours the achievements of Guelph individuals and teams who have attained prominence and distinction in any field of sport, and who have made a major contribution to the development and advancement of sports in Guelph. Each year inductees are celebrated at the Kiwanis Sports Celebrity Dinner, and their achievements are permanently recorded in a public display at the Sleeman Centre. 

The Guelph Sports Hall of Fame is managed by a Board of Directors and funded by the Kiwanis Club of Guelph through its annual induction dinner, and from grants by the City of Guelph.

Welcome Inductees to the Class of 2025

Scott Diamond (Athlete – Baseball)

Scott Diamond, a left-handed pitcher who honed his early baseball skills in the Guelph Minor Baseball Association (GMBA), carved out an inspirational path from Ontario to Major League Baseball. His impact on local baseball continues today, with the GMBA's annual pitcher of the year award bearing his name.

Despite going undrafted, Diamond's determination led him to sign with the Atlanta Braves organization in 2008. He reached his pinnacle when he debuted in the Major Leagues with the Minnesota Twins in 2011. His standout 2012 season saw him start 27 games, compile a 12-9 record, and strike out 90 batters while posting a 2.6 WAR. His major league journey continued through the Cincinnati Reds, Tampa Bay Rays, and Toronto Blue Jays organizations.

On the international stage, Diamond proudly represented his home country numerous times, highlighted by the 2009 World Baseball Classic and the Premier 12 inaugural tournament. In addition, before concluding his professional career, he ventured to Asia, taking the mound for the Incheon Wyverns in the Korean Baseball League, adding an international chapter to his baseball journey.

James Gillingham (Athlete - Basketball)

James was an exceptional basketball player and excelled at every level.    His high school achievements include: District 10 champions in grades 9-13 (1st Team All Start all 4 of 5 years and 2nd team all-star 1 year, 3-Time D10 MVP), CWOSSA champions 4 of 5 years of high school, OFSAA bronze and gold medals, 1st team all-OFSAA. Team Ontario silver in 1997 and gold in 1998, named MVP of the national tournament in 1998.

James received a D1 basketball scholarship to Bradley University in Peoria, Illinois.  He was named All-Conference for the Missouri Valley Conference all 4 years he was there and was team captain 3 out of 4 years.  Honors include: Three-time Missouri Valley Conference (MVC) All-Defense selection, Two-time All-MVC selection, All Freshman Team, Two-time All-MVC Most Improved selection. 

James was inducted into the Bradley University Sports Hall of Fame in 2018.  Accolades include 15th in program history with 1,416 career points, Owns the school record for consecutive free throws made with 44, Remains third in program history with 537 career free throws made.

He played on all levels of the Canadian Men’s National Team (Junior, Student, & Senior Men's) representing Canada at the Goodwill Games, University Olympics in Beijing, 6 Nations Cup, FIBA Tournament of the America's.

After university, James tried out for the Toronto Raptors 2 times then signed a contract to play for the German Bundesliga first division club, TBB Trier.  He remained with the TBB his entire career, playing 6 seasons retiring in 2010 after serving as team captain for 5 years.

After retiring from basketball in 2010, James returned to Guelph and served as an assistant coach for the Guelph Gryphons Men’s Basketball Team for 4 years.

Dr. David Leger (Builder – Rowing)

David has pioneered the sport of rowing in Guelph in many ways.  First as one of the early University athletes in the1970s and then in 2004, building a high school program.   As Head Coach of the High School program, he recruited coaches from Masters Competitive and Recreation Rowing to help grow the program.  Three additional high schools were recruited and 3 of the 4 high schools have stayed involved in the sport of rowing for two decades. A measure of success is the longevity and sustainability of these successful programs.  Dave’s skill and ability to lead the High School program in the early years and witness its success and sustainability, supported by volunteer coaches over two decades is a testament to his dedication to the sport.  

David has accomplished outstanding results as a rowing coach with an entirely volunteer career at the Guelph Rowing Club (2004-2024). The countless number of hours David has provided the sport of rowing and his philanthropic approach to ensuring equipment is maintained and accessible is remarkable. David was also a long-term Rowing Coach at the University of Guelph, starting as an assistant coach in 2009-11 and he moved to Head Coach in 2012 and remained in that role until 2022. Finishing many times in the top 10 for both women’s and men’s OUA Championships.

David has shared his knowledge and expertise in several governance roles as part of the Board of Directors at the Guelph Rowing Club, Chair of the Rowing Committee, and Canadian University Rowing Association (CURA) Vice President. He is a two-time recipient of the CURA Presidents Trophy. David continues to share his knowledge and skills with others by mentoring coaches both at the University and the Guelph Rowing Club, as well as, leading clinics focused on a variety of topics, including rigging and boat safety for new coaches and athletes.

Angela Lichty-Crowther (Athlete - Softball)

Angela was born in Guelph and was an outstanding local athlete in high school at GCVI.

1995 – joined Guelph Gators softball (previously played house softball in Guelph and surrounding rural communities) 

1997 – provincial team in softball and national champion with Guelph Gators softball.

She played collegiate softball at Simon Fraser University (1998-2003) while she earned her Bachelor’s Degree, where she was a two-time All- American. The team won the NAIA National Championship in her first year.

Angela also represented Canada as a member of the National Women’s Softball team for six years (2001-2006), during which time she competed in two World Championships (2002, 2006), a Pan American Games (2003) and the Olympic Games in Athens, Greece in 2004 (Canada finishing 5th).

In 2018, Angela was inducted into SFU’s Athletic Hall of Fame.

Keith Mason (Builder – Soccer)

Keith Mason has been a driving force in Canadian soccer for over 40 years, shaping the sport in Guelph and beyond. His legacy spans youth development, university programs, and semi-professional soccer, earning him widespread respect as a coach and mentor.

Keith began coaching with Guelph Soccer in 1981, quickly establishing himself as a leader in youth development. He played a pivotal role in the club’s growth, serving as a coach, rep coordinator, and board member before becoming Club Head Coach in 1997, where he focused on training and mentoring coaches.

In 1989, Keith took over as head coach of the University of Guelph’s Women’s Soccer Team, leading them to two U Sport National appearances, a silver medal, and earning Ontario Coach of the Year honors in 1990. In 2000, he transitioned to the men’s program, guiding the Gryphons to two OUA Championships, a National Bronze medal, and earning multiple OUA and U Sport Coach of the Year awards.

Beyond Guelph, Keith was an Ontario Soccer Association staff coach from 1993 to 2013, educating and mentoring coaches across the province. His expertise also extended to the international stage, serving as an assistant and head coach for Team Canada at multiple World University Games (2003, 2011, and 2015).

In 2020, Keith co-founded Guelph United FC, the city’s first semi-professional soccer team. As President, GM, and Head Coach, he led the club to a League1 Ontario Championship in its inaugural season, earning League1 Coach of the Year. Under his leadership, Guelph United has become a powerhouse in the region.

Keith Mason’s career is defined by a relentless commitment to player development, coaching excellence, and growing the game at all levels.
