HOWARD “SWAT” MASON

Swat Mason was a man for all seasons. On the ice, on the diamonds and on the track, he left his mark on the Guelph sporting scene for several decades.

In Inter-County baseball in 1938, he batted .455 at the plate and, on the mound, he struck out 33 batters in a 14 inning game. Guelph won the Ontario Junior Baseball Championship in 1937 and Mason coached the Guelph Leaflets to that same title in 1949. Throughout the 1930s, Swat won a number of running awards, including the Hardy Trophy in 1931 and the Hardy Relay Trophy in 1933.

He was just as dominant on the ice. At the start of the Second World War, he was a Detroit Red Wing prospect. He played for the Hamilton Tigers of the Ontario Hockey Senior A Association from 1945-48 before becoming the coach of the Junior B Guelph Biltmores from 1948-58.

He served as a scout for the New York Rangers from 1951-60.

Inducted into the Guelph Sports Hall of Fame – Veteran Athlete category – in 2007
